A Plug for the Environment

Lately I have been noticing all of the UGLY plastic bags lying around everywhere. I don't know if other cities are as bad as Houston, but this city is full of them. On top of this, it seems that when I go to the grocery store I come home with way too many bags - sometimes each bag has only one or two items.

So I have decided to change my ways. I ordered a nifty little bag from It just came in the mail today. The great thing about it is that it hooks onto the handles at the grocery store checkout to make it just as easy for the sacker as the plastic ones. Very cool. AND, it is incredibly tiny. Perfect for the diaper bag or purse. Here it is all folded up:

And unfolded:

I know this will only hold a few groceries so I will probably end up buying some more just like it. Or even better... just use some bags you have around the house. Let's make the earth we've been entrusted with a prettier place for our kiddos! Who knows, next I might try recyling or (gasp!) stop using paper towels.

Our Memorial Day Weekend Recap

I think all we did this past weekend was go out to eat. We had high hopes of blowing up Ellery's new baby pool but the weather just did not cooperate. Other exciting happenings around our house the past couple of days included:

Ellery's new favorite activity: watching the laundry spin around and around in the washer

Ellery's 2nd new favorite activity: taking apart toilet paper and attempting to eat it before I come take it away
Wow! Can you tell that we were stuck inside all weekend??

Seriously though this weekend was very relaxing. We were able to spend some time with my mom and dad and with friends. It was also nice to have some extra family time just the three (or four if you count Colby man) of us!

A Day at Noah's Ark

Today was so much fun! Our great friends Julie and Ella went with us to Noah's Ark, which is a wonderful little water park for toddlers. There are rainbow slides, waterfalls, tunnels, frogs and whales to sit on, and much more. It is a toddler's dream and a great place for moms to socialize, work on a tan, and eat kiddy treats from the snack bar. Here is a picture of it:

The girls LOVED it! Ellery couldn't get enough of this huge mushroom with water pouring down over it and off the sides. And Ella kept trying to swim - literally she would stick her face under the water like she was ready to take off. Unfortunately Ellery did not get the swimmer genes - I was never one for swim team or germ-filled water parks with those huge tunnel slides (can we say claustrophobic?).

And yet another plus about Noah's Ark: Ellery was yawning the minute I put her in the car seat to come home. And when we did get home, she took a long, 3 hour nap. Nice!
I hope to get some better pics next time but here is one of the girls holding onto the whale:

Everyone enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and be safe!

Anyone, anyone?

Paige is going to shoot me for writing this post, but I just thought I would throw this out there. I act like millions of people are reading this blog when in fact it is probably a measly five or six. Oh well. Here it goes. My sister, Paige, is looking for a JOB. She had a wonderful one last year teaching kindergarten in Frisco ISD (with the exception of some incidents that forced her to have to go through formal training in restraining five-year-olds..but we won't go into that). The problem is that she and her husband, Taylor, just moved into a new house in Colleyville, which created over an hour and a half commute time both ways. No fun! So, she is looking for something a bit closer. She is an AWESOME teacher and person in general and any school would be so blessed to have her.

So calling all Dallas/Ft. Worth residents....if you have any leads at all they would be greatly appreciated! And for the rest of you, if you don't mind saying a little prayer for Paige today, that would be appreciated as well. We all know how rough job searching can be!

I think she's teething...

From about month 2 Ellery has been a human water faucet. Drool on the carpet, drool on the clothes, drool on mom, drool on dad, well you get the picture. Also, from about month 2 people have been telling me that she is teething. I kept thinking any day now my infant's gummy smile would be completely overtaken by a giant, pearly white. Any runny nose or mild fever I would automatically attribute to her teething. Month 3 passed, no tooth. Month 5 passed, still no teeth. Month 6 and 7 passed (the average month that the first tooth makes its appearance), hmmmmmm still teething but no tooth. By month 8, 9, and 10 I decided that my child was going to kindergarten with no teeth. Most of her little buddies had between 4 and 6 teeth by now. No big deal I thought, she won't have to go through the agony and awkwardness of braces during the already oh-so-awkward junior high days.

Well...yesterday, 3 weeks before her 1st birthday, the first tooth emerged. Yeah! It's just one, but I have a feeling she is about to get hit with some more really soon. I guess she will not be biting into her birthday cake toothless after all. And I sure will miss her sweet gummy smile!

A taste of the good life

Last night Ellery attended her first birthday party for a friend, Cole, who just turned one. She also got her first taste of cake. And this wasn't just any cake. It was perfectly made by the one and only Nadine, from Who Made the Cake. Friends, this is wedding quality good! And Ellery did not disappoint her mama. She LOVED it! But then what do you expect when she comes from a long line of Gatewood cake-lovers. Icing-lovers in particular. So thrilled to know she can hang! Unfortunately I didn't get a picture witnessing her first taste of heaven, but I did get one of Ellery and Cole helping open gifts. HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY COLE!

To blog or not to blog?

Lately I have discovered blogging and one might even say that I have become slightly obsessed. So...instead of living vicariously through other bloggers that I know, I decided to create one myself. I guess it is just a way of letting family and friends know what we are up to, especially now that our lives are rarely dull (thanks to an adorable and energetic 11-month old with drama queen tendencies).

Have patience as I navigate through this blogging adventure. I hope to change the layout to something much cooler and add some links that I love.
For now, I leave you with the newest picture of sweet Ellery. And you can see more pictures on our shutterfly website (the link is to the right).
